Colin Powell is now trying to say that Republicans have become two narrow and need to broaden their base. He is criticizing Limbaugh and Cheney for moving the party away from the middle in his moderate opinion. In a recent Washington Post article, Powell asks, "Are we simply moving further to the right, and by so doing opening up the right-of-center and the center to be taken over by independents and to be taken over by Democrats?"
Well General, you may have had the position and credibility to ask such a question a year ago, but your recent Specter-like defection in the 2008 Presidential campaign has taken away and street cred you ever had with true Republicans. The party nominated the most moderate Republican candidate it has put forward in over 30 years. And what did you do Mr. Powell? You jumped ship for the bandwagon of the most liberal Democratic presidential candidate ever!! And now you have the nerve to criticize the party for moving to the right?
I'm all for including as many people as possible, we obviously have to appeal to independents and moderates to win a national election, but when Powell makes these statements after supporting a socialist like Obama, it is the utmost in hypocrisy. We need to reaffirm the conservative values that underpin the Republican party, not because it is best for the party, but because these values are best for the country, or whatever is left of this country after the radical left is done trashing it under this current administration and congress. If we embrace the most liberal elements of the Democratic party, as Powell has done, why don't we all just become Democrats?
